February 2024 at 3GT

Dear Divine 3Girls Theatre Communities,

Happy Black History Month 2024! 3Girls Theater is celebrating Black History Month by honoring the Black playwrights, directors, and artists we have had the joy of working with.

3GT is deeply saddened by the recent passing of Alicia Kester on December 25th, 2023. Alicia was a wonderful addition to our LezWritesBTQ Playwrights Cohort during our 2021-2022 season. We are so grateful to have worked with Alicia on the development of her brilliant and imaginative play Water Spirits, which received a staged reading on June 11th 2022. We have shared condolences, gratitude, and love for Alicia with her family. She is remembered by 3GT as a gifted playwright, a creative force, a wonderful collaborator, and a powerful Black, mixed-race, queer artist.

3GT is thrilled to announce that the World Premiere of ‘Tasha by Cat Brooks was named one of the Top 10 Best Plays of 2023 by Sam Hurwitt with The Mercury News! Starring Jeunée Simon, and directed by Dr. Ayodele Nzinga, ‘Tasha is a powerful one woman show exploring the in-custody murder of Natasha McKenna at the hands of law enforcement in Fairfax, Virginia in 2015. For more information about Cat Brooks’ brilliant play, please visit 3girlstheatre.org/tasha-2023. Congratulations to the entire ‘Tasha team on the well-deserved recognition for such a vitally important play.

3GT would also like to recognize four wonderful playwrights among our talented cohort this season! These artists and their plays are: Kimberly Ridgeway (Soul Mates), Phaedra Tillery-Boughton (SistahFriend) and Troy Rockett (The Whole Package). To support these incredible Black playwrights, be sure to register to attend the staged readings of their plays.  We are proud to announce this year’s AJ Baker Founder Fellow is Victoria Evans Erville, whose play Tell’n Tales & Roll’n Eyes was selected to receive a private workshop.

All of us at 3GT stand in solidarity with Black/Brown/BIPOC communities locally and around the world - celebrating their liberation, freedom, resistance, pride, healing, love, peace, joy, and creative contributions.

I wish you all a Happy Black History Month & Happy Lunar New Year!

May there be more art, healing, love, transformation, serenity, and a more peaceful tomorrow for everyone.

Un abrazo, Con Gratitud, & In Struggle,

Tina D’Elia
