Happy AAPI Heritage Month from all of us at 3Girls Theatre! This May is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the year-round achievements and important contributions of the Asian-American, Native-Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander communities.
3GT is proud to announce one of this year's Brady Fellows is Cathy Midori Stonie, whose incredible play In the Shadow of Mt. Fuji will receive a staged reading on June 9th. Directed by Keiko Shimosato Carreiro and dramaturgy by Nick Ishimaru, In the Shadow of Mt Fuji is about Isamu, an embittered and lonely middle-aged man with no future. His overbearing mother's constant pestering to find a wife and start a new life has driven him deeper into isolation. To escape reality, he writes a manga, a Japanese graphic novel. Little does he know how that graphic novel will lead him to an old Japanese folktale, to Mt. Fuji, and to a strange young woman who will affect his destiny. Featuring Randy Lee, Miyoko Sakatani, Sakura Nakahara, Joseph Alvarado, and Zoe Chien, In the Shadow of Mt. Fuji is a must-see. You can reserve your tickets here.
3GT would also like to applaud some of the talented artists we have had the pleasure of working with and highlight some AAPI-founded theatre companies in the Bay Area deserving of recognition:Â
-Wynne Chan, an incredible director, dramaturg, and performer, is currently directing Lloyd Suh's The Chinese Lady and A.R. Gurney's Love Letters at The Pear Theatre. Tickets are available here.Â
-Nghia X Nguyen is a fantastic playwright, whose play Incongruencies received a 3GT LezWritesBTQ reading and is available to watch here.Â
-Nick Ishimaru and Keiko Shimosato Carriero are two of the founders of Kunoichi Productions, whose mission is to create bold, innovative multidisciplinary theater with Japanese aesthetics, blending the ancient and the modern, using both comedy and philosophy while fusing Eastern and Western theatrical elements.Â
-Ferocious Lotus Theatre Company creates opportunities for Asian and Asian American theatre artists in the San Francisco Bay Area.
I grew up seeing very little Asian representation in the arts, and as a proud Taiwanese-American actor and arts administrator, am so excited to see increasing opportunities for the AAPI communities to tell their stories. I made my Bay Area acting debut with 3Girls Theatre back in 2018 - and am deeply grateful to 3GT for the continued support of my artistic career, and for 3GT's commitment to uplifting the voices of Bay Area AAPI playwrights, directors, dramaturgs, actors, and artists.
Wishing you a beautiful AAPI Heritage Month, and thank you for helping 3GT to put Women+'s Work Onstage, Where It Belongs!
With gratitude,
Zoe Chien, 3GT Associate Director
